The 2026 World Cup's Most Dangerous Group: Every Group of Death Ranked

Every World Cup produces its Group of Death — the group so loaded with quality that any of the four teams could realistically be eliminated despite being capable of winning the tournament. With 12 groups in 2026, the opportunities for brutal draws have multiplied. Here is every group ranked from most to least forgiving — and the verdict on which is the true Group of Death.

The True Group of Death: Group I — France, Norway, Senegal, Iraq

Group I is the 2026 World Cup's undisputed Group of Death. France are the tournament's co-favourites. Norway have Erling Haaland — the most prolific striker in world club football. Senegal are one of Africa's most complete sides, loaded with Premier League talent. Three of the four teams in Group I would be genuine knockout stage contenders in any other group. Iraq, as the fourth team, face an almost impossible task. This is the group nobody wanted to be in.

Runner-Up: Group C — Brazil, Morocco, Scotland, Haiti

Group C features two of the tournament's top ten favourites — Brazil and Morocco — alongside an organised Scotland side making their first World Cup appearance since 1998. Haiti, the group's minnows, face an extraordinary challenge in every match. Brazil vs Morocco is one of the group stage's most anticipated fixtures — a clash between two of the world's most passionate football nations that could define which of them wins the group.

Toughest for a Favourite: Group H — Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde

Spain — the tournament favourites — have drawn arguably the hardest group for a top seed. Uruguay are a two-time World Cup winner with Darwin Núñez and Valverde in their prime. Saudi Arabia famously beat Argentina in 2022. Cape Verde are historic debutants with genuine quality. Spain should advance comfortably, but this is not a group where mistakes are easily forgiven.

Most Balanced: Group L — England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama

Group L is the most evenly matched group in the tournament. England are the clear favourites, but Tuchel's controversial selections have introduced uncertainty. Croatia — with Modrić in his farewell tournament — are capable of beating anyone. Ghana are motivated and have deep personal knowledge of English football. Panama are dangerous on the counter. Any result in this group would not be a surprise.

Most Forgiving: Group B — Canada, Switzerland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Qatar

Group B is the 2026 World Cup's most accessible group for the advancing teams. Switzerland are the strongest side but face Canada on home soil — a fixture they cannot take lightly. Bosnia-Herzegovina bring European quality but no World Cup experience. Qatar are the group's clear weakest side. Two of these four teams advance — and for both Switzerland and Canada, Group B is exactly the draw they needed heading into a home tournament.
