AP-NORC Poll: 64% of Americans Say AI Is Developing Too Fast
A new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found that 64% of American adults believe artificial intelligence is developing too quickly. Only 27% said AI is progressing at about the right pace, and 8% said it is moving too slowly.
What else the survey found
The poll was conducted September 24 to 28 among 2,140 adults. Respondents expressed widespread concern about employment, privacy, environmental effects and the possibility of AI systems operating beyond human control. Roughly eight in ten said keeping AI under human control and protecting workers should be major government priorities.
Why it matters
Public skepticism could become an obstacle to AI deployment in sensitive areas such as healthcare, education, hiring and financial services, and it suggests political pressure for oversight may grow regardless of which party holds power.
