Cockroach Janata Party: How One Judge's Insult Sparked India's Biggest Viral Movement of 2026

May 21
2 min read

It started with a single word inside a Supreme Court chamber. Within 96 hours, it became one of the fastest-growing political movements in Indian social media history. Meet the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) — part satire, part protest, entirely unstoppable.

🔥 The Remark That Lit the Fire

On May 15, 2026, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made a remark during a Supreme Court hearing that set the internet ablaze. Referring to unemployed youth, he said: "There are youngsters like cockroaches, who don't get any employment or have any place in profession." The CJI later clarified that his comment was directed at those with fraudulent degrees — not India's youth as a whole. But the internet had already heard enough.

⚡ One Student. One Post. 4.6 Million Followers.

Within 24 hours, Abhijeet Dipke — a 30-year-old Indian PR student at Boston University and former AAP social media strategist — launched the Cockroach Janta Party on May 16, 2026. The name deliberately swaps 'Bharatiya' for 'Cockroach' as a jab at the ruling BJP. The numbers were extraordinary: 3 million Instagram followers in 3 days, 4.6 million by day four, 100,000+ on X, and 350,000+ membership registrations via Google Form by May 20.

🪳 "Secular, Socialist, Democratic, Lazy"

The CJP's official self-description is hard to read without laughing — and that's entirely the point. The viral slogan "Main Bhi Cockroach" (I Too Am a Cockroach) became India's Gen Z version of a rallying cry for everyone dismissed, underpaid, and left behind. The satirical manifesto takes aim at post-retirement political appointments for judges, party-hopping politicians, media ownership conflicts of interest, and vote deletion from electoral rolls.

💥 Why Did It Hit So Hard?

India's Gen Z is fighting a combustible mix of large-scale unemployment, rising inflation, exam scandals, precarious gig work, and deep alienation from institutions. When the nation's top judge appeared to confirm their worst fear — that those in power see them as pests — the reaction wasn't grief. It was fury dressed up as comedy. As YouTuber Meghnad S put it: "The CJP is a satirical, non-existent party, yet people believe it is a better alternative to reality. That's a giant commentary on Indian politics in general."

🗳️ Meme or Movement? What Happens Next?

The CJP is not a registered party with the Election Commission of India. But by May 2026, supporters were considering fielding a candidate in Bihar's Bankipur Assembly by-election against the BJP and Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party. A rival parody group — the National Parasitic Front — has already emerged, suggesting the movement is big enough to have its own counter-satire. Whether it becomes a genuine political force or a legendary internet moment, one thing is certain: India's cockroaches are not going anywhere.

"We are the cockroaches. We survive everything." That might just be the most honest political slogan India has produced in years.
