NASA Searches for Its Next Flight Directors: What the Mission Control Job Takes
One of the most respected jobs in human spaceflight was open for applications this month. NASA announced on October 2, 2026 that it was looking for a new class of flight directors, the people who lead mission control at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston. Applications closed on Monday, October 12, and NASA plans to announce selections by the end of the year.
What does a flight director do?
Flight directors lead teams of flight controllers, astronauts, and commercial and international partners during real-time missions, and they manage risk while the mission is underway. Before a mission, they work with engineering, safety and program partners to make sure the operational plan matches what the spacecraft can do. The people selected will lead missions to the International Space Station, Artemis missions to the Moon, and eventually the first human missions to Mars.
Who could apply?
Candidates had to be U.S. citizens with a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics. NASA also asked for substantial, progressively responsible professional experience, including time-critical decision-making in high-stress, high-risk environments. Many flight directors started as flight controllers, but NASA says that is not a requirement.
Training and what comes next
Those chosen will get extensive training in flight control and spacecraft systems, plus operational leadership and risk management. NASA's chief flight director at Johnson, Emily Nelson, described the role as that of an expert integrator who brings a broad range of teams and disciplines into one clear mission effort, at a time when NASA is supporting the space station while building the next phase of Artemis and Moon Base missions.
Careers in space beyond the astronaut
The call is a useful reminder that space careers are not only about astronauts. Mission control teams, engineers, scientists and creative professionals all make missions possible. If this role is a goal for you, NASA's careers pages explain the flight director path, and similar openings come up from time to time.
Quick FAQ
Can I still apply? No. Applications closed on October 12, 2026.
Do I need to have worked in mission control? No. NASA says previous flight controller experience is not required.
When will NASA announce its picks? By the end of 2026, according to the agency.
