Spirituality in America 2026: Millions Are Leaving Religion But Not Losing Faith

America is undergoing its most significant religious transformation since the early 19th century. The percentage of Americans who identify with no religious tradition has risen from 16 percent in 2007 to over 30 percent in 2026. But beneath that number lies a spiritual landscape of extraordinary diversity and genuine seeking that defies the simple narrative of American secularization.

The Nones: Who They Actually Are

The religiously unaffiliated encompasses three broad groups: atheists and agnostics who actively reject supernatural belief; the religiously indifferent who simply do not engage with religious questions; and spiritual-but-not-religious Americans who hold beliefs in the transcendent while rejecting institutional affiliation. This third group is the fastest growing spiritual demographic in the United States.

What Americans Are Turning to Instead

Meditation has gone mainstream — mindfulness apps have tens of millions of American users. Psychedelic-assisted therapy, now legal in several states, produces experiences that many participants describe in explicitly spiritual terms. Astrology, tarot, and various forms of neo-paganism have found significant followings particularly among younger Americans.

The Churches That Are Growing in 2026

While mainline Protestant denominations continue to experience membership declines, non-denominational evangelical megachurches have proven more resilient through contemporary worship formats and robust small group communities. Orthodox Christianity is growing among Americans seeking ancient liturgical tradition. Immigrant religious communities are among the most vital religious congregations in many American cities.

What the Transformation Means for American Society

Religious congregations have historically been primary providers of community and civic engagement — functions that do not automatically transfer to digital communities and individualized wellness practices. Researchers studying religious decline consistently find that the loss of regular in-person community contributes significantly to the loneliness epidemic and civic disengagement characterizing contemporary American life.
