Google and Constellation Lock In 890 MW of New Nuclear Power for AI Data Centers
Google and Constellation Energy announced a long-term agreement to add 890 megawatts of new nuclear generation to the PJM electricity grid through upgrades at 11 existing reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The details
The 20-year agreement supports more than $4 billion in upgrades meant to raise the output of existing plants, with the first additional electricity expected in 2028. The broader Google and Constellation arrangement also covers about 2.7 gigawatts of existing generation, bringing the overall relationship to roughly 3.59 GW. The companies are also working on an AI for Energy blueprint using Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise.
Why it matters
Data centers once bought power as just another operating expense. Gigawatt-scale AI campuses now require companies to secure generation years ahead, take part in grid planning and sometimes help finance new capacity. Building more artificial intelligence increasingly means investing in some of the most physical infrastructure on Earth.
