James Cameron's Lightstorm Acquires Outsyders: What the AI 3D Deal Means for Filmmaking
James Cameron's company Lightstorm Vision has acquired Outsyders, an AI-driven 3D technology company, in a deal announced on September 16, 2026. The goal is to give filmmakers one end-to-end solution for 3D production, from the camera to the finished frame.
What the deal brings together
Cameron founded Lightstorm Vision in 2024 to build native stereoscopic capture and production technology. Outsyders brings the other half of the puzzle: a production-proven AI pipeline that converts and processes footage into stereoscopic 3D at scale. Together, converted and natively shot footage can be made to look visually consistent, which has long been a challenge in 3D filmmaking.
Who are the Outsyders?
Outsyders was founded by Paul Becker (CEO), Jared Sandrew (Chief Innovation Officer) and Chris Harvey (Chief Creative Officer), a team of visual effects and immersive technology veterans. The company came out of stealth in 2025 with work on the IMAX documentary Blue Angels, Disney's Lilo & Stitch and the XR film Asteroid for Samsung and Google XR. Its 3D work has also appeared on Tron: Ares and Moana, and on Cameron's own concert film Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (in 3D).
Why Cameron is doing it
Cameron has said he has worked with Becker's team for almost two years and considers both their work and their AI tools world class. There is also a technical loop built into the deal: every production shot on Lightstorm's native stereoscopic cameras produces high-quality ground-truth data that can keep improving Outsyders' AI models. The companies say the aim is to lower the cost of high-quality stereoscopic content and improve tools for creators.
A VFX artist's take
After many years in Hollywood VFX, I see this as part of a bigger shift: AI is moving from experiments into real production pipelines, and 3D and immersive formats are one of the first places it is paying off. The creative judgment still belongs to artists, but the tools that make 3D affordable for more storytellers are getting serious backing. At Roseson Studios we follow this closely through our 3D and immersive work.
