Meta and Sierra Launch the Personal Agent Protocol, an Open Standard for AI Shopping Agents
Meta and AI customer experience company Sierra announced the Personal Agent Protocol, an emerging open standard meant to help personal AI assistants interact securely with businesses. Early partners include Shopify, Stripe and Walmart.
The draft and the partners
On October 9, Sierra published a draft of the protocol, known as Poppy, and announced 35 additional design partners, including OpenAI, PayPal, Mastercard, Visa, Bank of America and Cloudflare.
The problem it addresses
If an AI agent buys something or manages a subscription for you, a business needs to know who the agent represents, what it is allowed to do and how that authority is verified. The protocol focuses on authentication, permissions and transparency.
Why it matters
If widely adopted, it could shape how websites, payment systems and customer service are designed for a world where software, not people, does much of the clicking.
