SpaceX Pays About $8 Billion for Spectrum, Taking Aim at Nationwide Mobile Service
SpaceX took a big step beyond satellite internet this week by agreeing to acquire Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio. The reported price is roughly $8 billion, and the deal is subject to FCC approval.
What SpaceX gets
The portfolio gives SpaceX up to 14 MHz of paired low-band spectrum. Low-band frequencies travel long distances and penetrate buildings far better than many higher-frequency satellite signals, which addresses what SpaceX describes as one of the remaining technical gaps in its Starlink Mobile strategy.
Market reaction
Wireless carrier stocks fell sharply after the announcement as investors began pricing in the possibility that Starlink could eventually compete with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile rather than only offering satellite backup coverage for dead zones.
The bigger ambition
SpaceX envisions combining its satellite constellation with terrestrial wireless infrastructure so a single network can serve phones from both space and the ground. That is a much larger goal than filling coverage gaps in remote areas. Separately, reporting says SpaceX is discussing roughly $40 billion in financing largely to buy Nvidia processors, showing how capital-hungry its plans have become.
Regulatory approval and real-world network performance will decide whether this becomes a true fourth carrier or a powerful partner to existing ones.
