The Story Behind the Lucas Museum: How a $1 Billion Dream Landed in Los Angeles

2 min read

Some museums take a few years to build. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art took more than a decade, three cities and several false starts before it finally opened its doors in Los Angeles on September 22, 2026.

A museum without a home

Filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, first planned a museum for Lucas's art collection in San Francisco. After years of negotiations there, the project turned to Chicago, where a fight over lakefront land left it stuck. In 2016 the plan for Chicago was dropped, and in January 2017 Lucas announced that the museum would be built in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, close to his alma mater, the University of Southern California, and surrounded by other museums and local schools.

A building that looks like it floats

The museum was designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, with gardens by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA. The roughly 300,000 square foot building is clad in about 1,500 uniquely shaped white panels, and reviewers describe a cloud-like form that seems to hover above the park. Inside are more than 100,000 square feet of galleries, two theaters and a free research library. The project cost around $1 billion.

Years of delays

Construction began in 2018. The opening was first expected in 2021, then moved to 2023 because of the pandemic, then to 2025, and finally to 2026.

What is inside

This is not a Star Wars museum, although the Lucas Archives of props, models and concept art from his films are part of it. The wider collection spans painting, illustration, comics, photography and film, with artists such as Norman Rockwell, Jack Kirby and Frida Kahlo. The idea behind it is simple: popular storytelling in images deserves the same respect as traditional fine art. The permanent collection holds more than 40,000 works.

Why it matters for art lovers

As a painter and VFX artist, I find the museum's message encouraging. Stories told through images, from a comic panel to a film frame to an oil painting, belong to one long tradition. That is the same spirit behind the canvas art we create at Roseson Studios: art that tells a story and lives on your wall.
