DeepSeek Nears a $12 Billion Funding Round as China Builds Another Frontier AI Heavyweight
Chinese AI company DeepSeek is reportedly close to raising at least 80 billion yuan, about $12 billion, according to Bloomberg. The round has already exceeded its original target.
Who is investing
Tencent and battery giant CATL are among the largest investors. DeepSeek initially sought roughly 50 billion yuan, and signed commitments could push the final total toward 100 billion yuan, close to $15 billion. The company is also preparing for a possible domestic IPO in early 2027.
From efficient upstart to heavily funded lab
DeepSeek first drew attention by showing that competitive models could be built more efficiently than many Western rivals assumed. Efficiency has not removed the cost of competing at the frontier, though: it still needs accelerators, data centers, engineers and inference capacity, while operating under U.S. restrictions that limit access to some advanced Nvidia chips. Its closer relationship with Huawei reflects China's wider push for a more independent AI technology stack.
Why it matters
A round of this size turns DeepSeek from a disruptive research lab into an institution able to compete at industrial scale, and adds another well-funded player to a race that is increasingly decided by capital and chips as much as by research.
