Mistral Large 4: A Trillion-Parameter Open-Weight Model and Europe's Sovereign AI Bet
French AI startup Mistral has released a public preview of Mistral Large 4, an open-weight multimodal model of roughly 1.05 trillion parameters with a one-million-token context window.
How it works
The mixture-of-experts design activates roughly 49 to 52 billion parameters per token, depending on the documentation. It targets coding, agentic workflows, multimodal tasks and enterprise applications. Mistral says it will publish the full model weights after the preview period.
The sovereignty angle
The largest American frontier labs rely mainly on closed models, while Chinese developers have grown influential in open-weight AI. Mistral is positioning Europe as a third option: advanced models that governments and companies can run on infrastructure they control. That appeals to regulated industries and institutions worried about privacy and dependence on U.S. or Chinese platforms.
